When and where thunderstorms will hit Cornwall this week

The Met Office has revealed when thunderstorms will hit Cornwall at the start of next week.

A yellow Met Office weather warning has been issued for Monday to Thursday across the UK, with weather forecasters saying that the thunderstorms could bring torrential downpours, large hailstorms and strong winds to affected areas with a risk of flash flooding.

They also say that the exact details of when and where the thunderstorms might hit Cornwall are unclear as there’s a lot of instability in the atmosphere with some areas seeing heavy storms while a few miles down the road there could be sunshine.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Because of a lot of instability in the atmosphere, there’s a lot of uncertainty on the exact details where the thunderstorms will hit. There will be some areas that could see severe thunderstorms while a few miles down the road there might be none. There’s a risk but it won’t happen for everyone.

“The forecast will initially see showers or small localised storms through tonight into the early hours of tomorrow where a few people may be woken by rumbles of thunder in the early hours of Monday morning.

“There’s a risk across Cornwall of torrential downpours with large hail and strong winds, with the showers moving in a northeasterly direction from Cornwall to Devon bringing drier weather by the afternoon. Some areas may remain dry during the day while others could see severe weather with a maximum temperature of 28 degrees”.

Stay in the know

With the worst of the storms set to hit on Monday, the weather in Cornwall on Tuesday is set to remain hot, with a possibility of showers.

The Met Office spokesperson continued: “The weather on Tuesday is likely to be hit and miss for many with some areas seeing showers and others remaining dry with a maximum temperature of 29 degrees.

“Areas without storms will see temperatures in the high 20’s or early 30’s with sunshine although there’s a risk of additional hazards from heavy rain, large hail, and flash flooding across both days.”
