Town crier cuts the ribbon to open new Tesco Express store in city centre

The new store opened its doors for the first time at 10am on Friday, December 6 with the town crier, Lionel Knight, cutting the ribbon.

Timothy Clegg, store manager of Truro Express, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to open the doors of our new Tesco Express and start our serving the community.

“I’m honoured to head up a superb team including 18 newly recruited colleagues.

“It’s also very exciting that we’re part of the Tesco Stronger Starts grant scheme, which is all about providing vital funding to schools to help support the health and wellbeing of youngsters.

“We invite all our shoppers to put forward a school or children’s group to benefit from this fantastic grant opportunity.”

Local schools and community groups are invited to apply for community funding through Tesco’s Stronger Starts, Tesco’s blue token voting scheme, which sees three local projects voted on by customers in store every three months, with first place awarded £1,500, second place £1,000 and third place £500.

To celebrate the store opening, Tesco will be making a donation of £500 to the Truro Homeless Action Group.

The new Express store will also participate in the Community Food Connection scheme, which redistributes surplus food to charities and community groups from every Tesco store at the end of each day.

Since its launch in 2016, the Tesco Community Food Connection Scheme has donated more than 145 million meals to charities across the UK.

This scheme is run in partnership with food redistribution charity FareShare. Each month more than one million meals’ worth of food are donated across the country.

The new store is located at 32 Boscawen Street, Truro, Cornwall, TR1 2QH, and is open from 7am-11pm Monday-Sunday.

Among the services at the store will be a bakery, meal deals, and lottery tickets.

Local organisations can apply for grants through the Tesco website here: https://tescostrongerstarts.org.uk/
