Top Trumps is the nostalgic card game everyone has played and it’s made in Cornwall

Top Trumps is one of the world’s biggest card games and has been around for decades. But it’s a little-known fact that the popular game is actually made in Cornwall.

Top Trumps has been around since it was first published in 1978. The idea is that each card contains a list of numerical data and the aim of the game is to compare these values to try to ‘trump’ and win an opponent’s card.

A wide variety of different themed packs of Top Trumps have since joined the shelves – from cars and animals to popular TV shows and movies that got huge over the years. And a printing company in Cornwall is responsible for the making of millions of packs of them.

St Austell Printing Company (SAPC) got a contract to print Top Trump cards at its St Austell Business Park base in 2017. The firm at the time was expected to print two million packs of the iconic card game a year.

It’s not known how many it currently prints. In order to fulfil the contract, the company had to invest in a £500,000 Rollem machine that cuts, collates and wraps the cards in cellophane.

Roblox, Anime Movies and Women’s European Football Champions have just joined the growing list of Top Trump packs available to buy ahead of Christmas. You can browse and buy various Top Trumps on Amazon, WHSmith and most major supermarkets.
