The Wheelhouse in Falmouth, one of Cornwall’s most popular restaurants, to close next month

One of the most popular seafood restaurants in Cornwall will close its doors next month. Plans for the waterside eatery in Falmouth to reopen later in the year are still ‘up in the air’.

The Wheelhouse, which is in the Top 5 of over 100 Falmouth restaurants listed on reviews site TripAdvisor, will close on May 28 so owner Tina Hopton can “take stock and spend more time with the people I love most”. There has been a mad rush by fans of the crab and oyster bar to book and enjoy one last hurrah before it shuts up shop.

Tina announced the popular restaurant on Upton Slip would close earlier this year, saying she and her staff hoped to return in the wintertime. However, she told CornwallLive: “Plans for reopening remain up in the air! Nothing is set in stone, but we definitely won’t be open over the summer.”

Her original statement read: “It is with one part sorrow and two parts joy that I write this message to you. I am closing the restaurant on May 28th in order to take stock and spend more time with the people I love most. I am hoping to return in the wintertime – when the oysters are fat and the nights are dark. I want to give a most heartfelt thank you to all who have sailed in this wonderful ship. What a truly beautiful journey it has been.”

The Wheelhouse quickly became a word-of-mouth sensation when it opened in the last decade and is famed for being constantly booked up – it’s a no-frills celebration of locally caught crab, lobster, scallops and other shellfish. The experience of getting messy while cracking open the shells and mopping up the sauce with great hunks of bread has ensured it has always been mentioned as one of the best restaurants in Cornwall.

The top review on TripAdvisor reads: “Had THE best time at the Wheelhouse. We were delighted to get in at all as it can be fully booked six months in advance. It absolutely did not disappoint, and even exceeded our expectations. Was wonderfully quirky, staff very attentive, and most importantly the food was sublime. Freshly caught local shellfish cooked to perfection, with local homemade bread and crispy fries. The welcome and ambience felt like we were at a good friend’s house for dinner (a Michelin starred chef friend), in their front room overlooking the harbour. Wonderful wonderful wonderful … If you can go, please do so.. You will not be disappointed. Simply THE best restaurant in the whole of Cornwall, never mind Falmouth. 1000000% recommend.”
