Latest map shows Covid hotspots covering over half of Cornwall

The latest coronavirus cluster map for Cornwall shows an increasing number of areas with confirmed virus cases. Callington & Pensilva had the highest total number of cases with 29 in the week up to December 15.

The second highest number was found in Gunnislake & Calstock with 27 cases, a rise of 25 over the seven-day period ending the previous day.

Several areas are now showing increases in confirmed cases of coronavirus. They include St Austell East & Carlyon Bay (14), Penzance North (9), St Ives & Halsetown (8) and Bude & Stratton (7).

The rate of Covid-19 infection per 100,000 across the county is 53 – an increase of 191 per cent over seven days. The latest count of cases on December 15 stood at 305. On December 14 it was 251 and the week before that 105. The upward trend is broadly in line with increased cases across the rest of the country, though the overall number of people affected is still relatively small.

Areas with three or more cases are considered to be clusters. Using that measure, more than half of the county is now reporting hotspots.

The latest data comes as the Prime Minister announced that London and parts of the South East would enter a new Tier 4 of restrictions, effectively putting million of people into a new lockdown.

The latest cluster map was updated on Sunday afternoon (December 20).

The rate per 100,000 across the county (53) compares to the Devon County Council area (118), the South West (114) and England (262).
