All the details of late night Christmas shopping in Truro

Truro is preparing to reopen for Christmas when the lockdown is lifted on Wednesday.

There will be Christmas late night shopping in Truro on four Wednesdays from this week now that the shops have been given the go-head by Government to re-open on Wednesday, December 2.

The City Centre Christmas Lights will be illuminating Truro and the main shopping streets will be closed to traffic until 9pm to give space to shop, eat and drink. Locals and visitors can eat-in, or enjoy food on the go, from Truro’s eateries while they admire the illuminations.

From December 9 there will be street entertainment and music taking place for late night shopping evenings, including walkabout performances from Swamp Circus dressed up as winter festive characters, and performances from local brass bands and dance groups.

To add to the atmosphere, Truro BID will be projecting large illuminated visuals for the third year in a row on the TUI building and on the Arts Café in River Street.

The content for the projectors this year includes an extract from Truro’s first Virtual Christmas Lights Switch-on film streamed on November 18 and the display of children’s artwork of elephants.

There will also be content from local dance groups Hall for Cornwall Youth Dance Company, Jason Thomas Performing Arts Foundation Course, All Boys Dance and Cornwall Dance School.

Truro BID manager Alun Jones said: “There will be space for people to shop and we urge everyone to maintain their social distance and keep to the left in the direction that they are walking in while in Truro. Since it’s the first day that shops can reopen, the full entertainment programme for late night shopping will start on December 9.

“While Christmas shopping will be a bit different this year, we’re delighted that Cornwall’s residents will be able support Truro’s shops and eateries as well as enjoy the additional Christmas lights. These include the extra new angel Christmas lights which have been possible thanks to the kind donation from our town crier, Lionel Knight.”

As throughout the year, shoppers can take advantage of free parking in Cornwall Council’s long stay car parks from 4pm and short stay car parks from 5pm.

There will also be free parking all day on Saturday, December 5, at the following Cornwall Council car parks in Truro: Carrick House, Edward Street, Fairmantle (coach park only), Garras Wharf, Moorfield, Moresk, Old Bridge Street, Pydar Street and Viaduct.

The farmers’ market will be opening late on Lemon Quay from December 2 and Boscawen Street will feature entertainment only (mainly from December 9) rather than annual Truro Christmas Street Markets to give more space to shop.

On Saturdays through to Christmas there will also be some street entertainment, organised by Truro BID and the roads will be traffic-free from 9am until 5pm. This includes walkabout entertainment from Pokya Entertainment which has been funded by Tyller A Nerth.

Truro’s Mayor Bert Biscoe said: “Truro will open for business with a smile of welcome and relief broadly across its face, all arguments, anxieties and letters from landlords, banks, utilities and taxmen bundled in the pending tray – Truro’s doors will be ajar, brimming with goods to buy, with menus to pore over, coffees to die for and lunches to revive you, and deposits to make.

“Buses will be running, trains clattering over the viaduct, queues will be marked out, messages encouraging you to keep left and keep distanced will sweetly but purposefully implore you.

“Trade is the lifeblood of society: No trade – no tax; No tax, no hospitals, roads, care, play parks or cops – and towns are the best places to do the best sort of trade – in a town which values quality, choice, polite and cheerful service, and a safe environment.

“See you Thursday, or on one of the 22 days before Christmas – and hopefully … thereafter!”
